When is the right time to aerate?
The optimal window is the first two weeks of September. Three conditions need to align:
- Soil moisture. Soil should be moist but not saturated. Dry summer soil resists the core extraction; wet October soil tears rather than pulling clean plugs. Early September after a few inches of recent rain hits the sweet spot.
- Growth window remaining. Grass needs roughly 4-6 weeks of active growth after aeration to recover before winter dormancy. Aerating in October leaves the lawn with too little recovery time. Aerating in August stresses already-stressed turf during the year’s hottest stretch.

How do you know if your lawn needs aeration?
Three simple field tests:
The screwdriver test. Push a long screwdriver into the lawn at multiple points. If it goes in 8+ inches with light pressure, compaction is moderate. If it stops at 4-5 inches even with hard pressure, compaction is significant.
The pooling test. Watch the lawn during the next rain event. If water pools in spots and runs off rather than infiltrating, the soil isn’t accepting water — a sign that pore space is closed.
The thatch and turf inspection. Pull up a small chunk of lawn and look at the soil structure. Healthy aerated soil has visible pore space and is friable when crumbled. Heavily compacted soil is dense, slick, and doesn’t break apart easily.
