When exactly does the tree planting window open in the Pacific Northwest?
The opening signal is soil temperature at 6 inches dropping into the 55-65°F range with overnight air temperatures consistently in the 40s. That combination usually arrives in the first or second week of October across most of the Eastside, though microclimate variation matters more for trees than for many other plantings.
Lower-elevation properties near Lake Washington — Mercer Island, parts of Bellevue, Kirkland’s lakefront neighborhoods — hold residual summer heat in the soil longer. The planting window often opens a week later there than at higher elevation. Properties on the Sammamish plateau, Cougar Mountain, or the Issaquah Highlands typically enter the window first, sometimes by late September.
The closing signal for deciduous trees is the ground beginning to freeze hard or the soil getting saturated enough that planting holes won’t drain. Across most of our 15-city service area — Seattle, Bothell, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Woodinville, Sammamish, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Kenmore, Shoreline, Lynnwood, Edmonds, Duvall, and Monroe — that’s mid-December in a typical year, occasionally extending into early January on milder coastal sites. Evergreens close earlier. Broadleaf evergreens (laurels, rhododendrons, mature camellias) and most conifers benefit from being planted by early November so they have at least 30 days of root establishment before winter wind starts pulling water from the canopy. Plant evergreens too late in fall, and winter desiccation often does more damage than a freeze would.
Why is fall planting better than spring for most trees here?
The biology comes down to three factors that all favor fall in our climate:
Warm soil + cool air = root development without canopy stress. In fall, soil temperature stays elevated longer than air temperature drops. The tree’s energy goes into root establishment because the canopy isn’t actively photosynthesizing or pushing growth. By spring, when the canopy comes out of dormancy, the root system is already established and can support new growth.
Winter rain handles the watering for free. Western Washington gets 30+ inches of rain between October and April. A fall-planted tree gets six months of automatic establishment watering before it faces summer drought. A spring-planted tree often faces dry stretches within three months of planting, requiring hand-watering through summer to survive its first year.
Cool dormant period reduces transplant shock. Trees moved from nursery to landscape lose root mass — sometimes a substantial fraction — in the dig-up. Fall planting gives the root system months to regenerate before the canopy needs to support growth. Spring planting forces canopy and root development to compete for energy from day one.
The honest counter: bare-root deciduous trees actually plant better in early spring when they’re still dormant. Most retail and wholesale nurseries deliver bare-root stock in February-March. So for bare-root tree projects specifically, spring is the right window. For containerized or B&B (balled-and-burlapped) stock — which is the majority of residential tree purchases — fall wins.
Which trees actually perform well when fall-planted in Seattle?
The species that fall-plant most reliably in Western Washington — across hundreds of installations on Eastside properties — share a pattern: deciduous, root-active in cool soils, and not prone to winter desiccation.
Maples (small specimen trees):
- Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’ — the coral bark Japanese maple, exceptional winter interest, prefers part shade
- Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ — classic upright Japanese maple, dependable color
- Acer palmatum ‘Crimson Queen’ — weeping dissectum, gorgeous structure even bare
- Acer circinatum — vine maple, our native, performs in dry shade where most Japanese maples won’t
Maples (larger structural trees):
- Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’ — fall-color red maple, fast establishing, large
- Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ — the structural alternative when October Glory’s habit doesn’t fit
Other small specimens:
- Parrotia persica ‘Vanessa’ — Persian ironwood in upright form, exceptional fall color and bark
- Cornus nuttallii — pacific dogwood, the native, requires good drainage
- Stewartia pseudocamellia — Japanese stewartia, demanding but spectacular when sited well
- Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’ — eastern redbud cultivar, fast structure
Structural shade trees:

Which trees should you NOT plant in fall?
Not every tree benefits from fall planting. Specific categories to avoid in the October-December window:
Magnolias — both deciduous and evergreen magnolias have heavy, fleshy root systems that prefer warmer soil for establishment. They struggle through the cool wet winter and often show transplant decline through their first spring. Plant magnolias in March-April instead.
Broadleaf evergreens after early November — laurels (especially Prunus laurocerasus), camellias, mature rhododendrons. The canopy keeps transpiring through winter; if the root system hasn’t established enough to keep up with water demand, winter desiccation produces brown leaf edges and sometimes whole-shoot dieback.
Tender exotics — anything marginal for our USDA zones 8a/8b is safer planted in spring after frost danger has passed. Magnolia grandiflora, mature olive trees, tender citrus, marginal palms — give them a full growing season to establish before testing their winter hardiness.
Bare-root trees outside early spring — bare-root stock has lost too much root mass for fall planting; the dormant spring window is the right time.
Trees with active canopy — any tree still pushing growth (which sometimes happens with unseasonably warm Septembers) shouldn’t be moved until growth slows. Wait for the leaves to start coloring or dropping.
How deep, how staked, and how mulched should the install be?
The single most common failure mode for residential tree plantings isn’t species choice or timing — it’s installation depth. Trees planted too deep fail more often than trees planted in the wrong species choice.
The standard: the root flare (the point where the trunk widens to meet the roots) should sit at or slightly above the surrounding soil grade. Most container and B&B stock arrives with the root flare buried by 1-3 inches of soil from the nursery process — you’ll need to brush back the surface soil to find it before planting. Then dig the planting hole so that root flare sits at grade.
The other install variables that matter:
Hole width. Two to three times the root ball diameter. The depth should be exactly the depth of the root ball — no deeper. Loose soil under a heavy root ball causes settling, which buries the root flare and starts the failure cascade.
Staking. Stake only when needed (windy sites, tall lightweight stock, fresh installations on slopes). Remove stakes after 12-18 months — leaving them longer prevents the trunk from developing the taper that wind resistance requires.
Mulch ring. A 2-3 inch mulch layer extending 3-5 feet from the trunk. Keep mulch off the trunk itself — the “mulch volcano” pattern of piling mulch against the bark traps moisture and causes bark rot. The correct shape is a wide flat ring, not a cone.
Watering schedule. Trees need consistent water during their first 18 months of establishment. Year one: deep watering every 7-10 days from May through October. Year two: deep watering every 14-21 days through summer. Year three onward: established trees in the right species generally don’t need supplemental watering.

What does the first 18 months of watering actually look like?
Most homeowners underwater new trees. They water frequently and shallowly (a few minutes with a hose, often), which trains roots to stay near the surface where they’re vulnerable to drought stress. The correct pattern is the opposite: water deeply, infrequently.
Year one summer (June-September):
- Deep soak every 7-10 days
- 15-25 gallons per watering for a 1-1.5 inch caliper tree
- Apply via slow drip from a hose at the trunk base, or a watering bag (Ooze Tube, Treegator) for steady release
- Water until soil is moist 12-18 inches deep — check by pushing a long screwdriver in
Year one fall and winter:
- Generally no supplemental watering needed in Western Washington
- The exception is an unusually dry October — water once if no significant rain falls for two weeks
Year two summer:
- Deep soak every 14-21 days
- 25-35 gallons per watering — the tree has grown and needs more
- Same depth standard: moisten 12-18 inches deep
Year three onward:
- Right-species trees in appropriate sites are typically self-sufficient
- Drought-stress years may warrant occasional deep watering through summer
- Wrong-species trees in wrong sites may need supplemental watering indefinitely (a sign of mis-match)
Should you DIY tree planting or hire?
Tree planting is one of the enhancement categories where DIY works for many homeowners — but the threshold where hiring makes sense is lower than for other planting work.
DIY makes sense for:
- 1-2 small trees per project (sub 1.5-inch caliper)
- Sites with easy access (truck-accessible drop point, no stairs or tight corners)
- Standard species in well-prepared planting beds
- Homeowners willing to manage the year-one watering schedule
Professional installation makes sense for:
- 3+ trees per project (the work scales fast)
- Larger caliper trees (2-inch and above — they exceed safe lifting weight)
- Trees with B&B root balls (heavy, awkward, requires specialized equipment)
- Difficult site access (hand-carry, slope, narrow passages)
- Properties where the tree placement has design implications across the broader landscape
