Basalt. Locally sourced from Washington state, which lowers material cost and means the stone is naturally adapted to our environment. The dark grey-to-black color fits the Pacific Northwest palette because it is the Pacific Northwest palette. It looks native because it is.
Bluestone. A dense, fine-grained sandstone with a blue-grey color that deepens beautifully when wet. Dense enough to resist significant freeze-thaw damage. Provides good wet traction on its natural cleft surface. The premium choice for a refined, slightly formal aesthetic.
Flagstone (quartzite-based). Irregular shapes in earth tones — buff, brown, grey, red. The cleft surface provides excellent wet traction. Quartzite flagstone is denser and more resistant to moisture absorption than sandstone-based flagstone. In our climate, quartzite is the better investment.
Slate. Dense, layered stone with dramatic visual impact. Handles water well and its layered texture provides natural grip. The caution: some slate varieties delaminate (layers separating) after repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Sourcing from reputable quarries with freeze-thaw-tested product is essential.

Natural stone ages with character. The moss that grows in flagstone joints — the same moss that is simply maintenance on a paver patio — becomes an aesthetic feature on stone.
