Where composite performs well

Composite doesn’t rot. It won’t split, warp, or crack from moisture cycling. It doesn’t need staining, sealing, or painting — ever. In a climate where untreated wood is assaulted by eight months of rain followed by two months of dry heat, that durability advantage is real. Where it works: Front yard boundary definition, pool enclosures (code-compliant options available), and properties where maintaining sight lines matters more than privacy. The limitation: Metal fencing provides zero privacy. If your primary goal is screening — from neighbors, from road noise, from wind — metal fencing doesn’t accomplish it. Some homeowners pair aluminum fencing with a dense hedge planting (Portuguese laurel, skip laurel, or photinia are common choices in our area), which provides both the structural boundary and the privacy screen. The better approach — and what we’ve moved to on most of our fence installations — is steel post brackets or concrete post bases that elevate the wood above the soil contact point. The upfront cost is slightly higher, but eliminating the ground-contact decay point can add five to ten years to the fence’s functional lifespan.

The system we’ve standardized on for most residential fence work is a galvanized steel post bracket set in concrete — products like the Simpson Strong-Tie ABU post bases or similar heavy-duty standoff brackets.
