Turf Tips From Dave
This month I want to help everyone out there who wants to have a great looking lawn! This is for every homeowner that must wage his/her own war every weekend since you don’t have the convenience of a personal contractor to take care of this for you. Don’t fret! I’ll make this as simple and easy as possible.
I will assume that you have a relatively good stand of turf…free of open bare spots, with a healthy density. If not, these same steps will help prepare your lawn for a good aeration and seeding this fall.
The key to a healthy looking lawn lies in just three basic needs. First, prevent crabgrass from being a part of the lawn and choking out the desirable grass. Second, kill those ugly broadleaf weeds (dandelion, clover, etc.). Third, feed those grass plants!
Fortunately, there are products available to the average homeowner that will take the “science” out of the equation yet still help you achieve the results you want. I have seen excellent success with the Scott’s line of products, but others are available that do essentially the same things.
So let’s get started!!
First: Measure your lawn.
Employ whatever method works to acquire the square footage. You’ll need this information to determine the amount of product you will need to purchase.
Second: Apply a fertilizer.
I recommend “Scotts Turf Builder with Halts Crabgrass Preventer” NOW!!! If you wait much longer, the crabgrass will have already emerged from the soil and you’ll be looking at those ugly patches throughout the year.
Third: Apply “Scotts Turf Builder with PLUS 2 Weed Control” in mid-May to early June.
Fourth: Apply “Scotts Super Turf Builder with Summer Guard” in July/August.
With your square footage in hand, head to your local garden center. The folks there will be able to assist you in purchasing the correct amount indicated by the “rate” information on each bag of product.
For those of you lacking desirable turf or for those with a thin density, look for my blog in August to help you achieve those goals. We will discuss how to establish a lush, healthy lawn. If you need further help, never hesitate to contact your friends at Classic Landscaping, Inc.!
